Latest version
The latest version of this software is Psychosynth 0.1.3. Be warned that the project is still on alpha stage, and is not ready for a production environment. It can be downloaded in the following formats.

Source packages
With the source tarballs you will get the source code of the program that you will hace to compile in your own machine. To learn how to compile the program you may follow the installation guide.

* [ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/psychosynth/psychosynth-0.1.3.tar.gz psychosynth 0.1.3]

Binary distributions
The binary distributions are ready to be installed in a concrete architecture or system. Note that Psychosynth may be already in the official repository of your distribution, also, some of these binary packages might be obsolete. Here we only list our own packages or some done by contributors.

Debian GNU/Linux
* Debian Repository. Unofficial packages.

Open SUSE
* RPM packages for OpenSuse can be found here. Thanks to Tony Graffy.

Development version
If you want to check the current project state or you are a developer and want to put your hands in the code, you can get the latest development version by executing:

bzr branch http://bzr.savannah.nongnu.org/r/psychosynth/trunk

This will download the source code. To compile and install the program you can follow this installation guide. If you just want to take a look, you can also browse the source online.

First of all you must get a copy of the sources of this program. Go to the download section if you do not have them yet. Note that this document is only to install from the sources -if there is a binary package for your distribution, use that instead.

Dependencies
Then, to try the software you will need these third party libraries and programs:

* GNU Autotools (only for the SVN version)
* Ogre (needed by the 3D interface)
* CEGUI (needed by the 3D interface)
* OIS (needed by the 3D interface)
* liblo (needed for the network support)
* libxml2 (needed for XML config support)

* Alsa (needed for ALSA sound output)
* Jack (needed for Jack sound ouput)
* libsndfile (needed for pcm file support)
* libvorbis (needed for OGG vorbis file support)
* SoundTouch (needed for sample stretching)

In Debian and Ubuntu you can install all those dependencies with the following command. Anyways, I suggest installing liblo from the original sources because the version in the repositories is outdated and contains a bug:

apt-get install automake libtool libogre-dev libois-dev libcegui-mk2-dev libasound2-dev libjack-dev liblo0-dev libsndfile-dev libxml2-dev libsoundtouch1-dev libvorbis-dev

When installing using bzr files previous you have to install some dependencies before (tested on lenny), use dpkg -l |grep libboost to check that previous version is not installed, if is installed remove all packets that shows the output of dpkg -l |grep liboost

# apt-get install libboost-serialization1.35-dev libboost1.35-dev libsigc++-2.0-dev

then continue with the following installation (first check that file configure.ac has commented this line: PACKAGE_DATA_DIR="./data")

# autoreconf

# ./configure

# make

and then run the program simply typing psynth3d, if the program gives you the output: [/alsa] WARNING: Could not write to device. (Broken pipe) change the audio to oss in config menu.

Installing
If you downloaded the program from Bazaar you will first need to generate the compilation scripts:

autoreconf

Now you will need to run the configuration script to detect the the libraries and set up the compilation settings.

./configure

Check that everything has been detected correctly and then compile the program:

make

At last we must run these commands with superuser privileges to install:

make install
ldconfig

We can now run the 3D simulator:

psynth3d

Troubleshooting
* While installing on Ubuntu the configure script says 'libsoundtouch not found', while I've just installed it!

Yes, this is actually a bug in 0.1-1. The problem is that the configure script have some trouble finding right package on Ubuntu (seems it's only Ubuntu problem). It should be fixed in next release.

* I was unable to compile the source, some errors associated with 'cstring' library appeared.

It's just because you've got too new gcc. The source was prepared for older compiler. There are two ways of solving this issue: a) you can backport the compiler (I don't recommend this) or b) you can wait for new source code that'll work with the newest gcc (although this solution may require patience, as psychosynt is not very often updated). It also should be fixed in next release.

This tutorial explains how to use gtk and jack-recordmydesktop to record video with psychosynth using directly the output of the program, with much better quality than with a microphone and a video camera:)

Installing and jack-gtk recordmydesktop
The first step is to install these two programs. From a Debian-based distribution it can be done really simply:

apt-get install jackd gtk-recordmydesktop

If you have other Linux distribution you need to find and install right packages manually. See these homapages: jack and recordmydesktop.

Starting Jack
First let's explain briefly what the Jack is.

Jack is a sound system, which works both on GNU / Linux and MacOS X that is oriented to interconnect the sound signal between several applications. An application can use Jack's input and output, both audio and MIDI. When the Jack is installed, any application can use its inlets and outlets to send and receive information. We can also change connections between programs, using applications like qjackqtl.

What we want to do is to connect Psychosynth to a program that allows us to record videos of the desktop, so that it can capture the output of Psychosynth directly, without any noise from surrounding.

The first thing you have to do is to start Jack. You have to specify a system output with the '-d' option. To make everything work better, you should also adjust the sampling rate at which Psychosynth usually works with the '-r' option. We could also adjust Psychsynth's sampling rate, so it would match the Jack.

Thus, you can run:

jackd -d oss -r 44100

Or, alternatively:

jackd -d alsa -r 44100

Running Psychosynth sending the output to Jack
Now we have to launch Psychosynth so that is send output to Jack. We can do this in two ways:

Through the console
We'll use the "-r" option to specify the system output. Note the output system will change permanently, you'll have to switch to oss or to alsa in order to stop using Jack.

psynth3d -o jack

Through the graphical interface
That's really simple. First, click the 'Configure the program settings' button, to access Settings window. In field 'output' choose 'jack' and then press 'apply'. Ready :). Here's an image:

Recording the video with gtk-recordmydesktop
To record the video, run:

gtk-recordMyDesktop

The first thing you have to do is to click on "advanced" button. Now, go to the Performance tab and then activate the option "full shots every frame", otherwise RecordMyDesctop won't be able to record properly the windows using OpenGL (like the Psychosynth).

If you are using a Debian based distribution, the best way to install Psychosynth is to add the repository to your sources list. To add your repository you may do it graphically using Synaptic or just edit this file as root: /etc/apt/sources.list. The Psychosynth project aims to create an interactive modular soft-synth inspired by the ideas of the Reactable. We will try to provide a clean object oriented API to allow the creation of new innovative interfaces for the synthetizer and a 3D simulator of a Reactable-alike device with support for collaborative music creation over the internet.

Our main goal is to create a free software alternative to allow newbies, developers and professionals explore new ways of making music. It is also important to build a comunity to ease the comunication between we, software devolopers, and electronic music makers, who can provide insightfull ideas on how to turn new experimental features into usefull and creative tools.

What does the Psychosynth package provide?
* libpsynth: This is a powerful C++ library for the building of synthesis software. It provides, among other things: abstraction over the audio divices of the system, basic audio synthesis classes (oscillators, filters, etc.), a system of connectable synthesis modules with a generic API, classes for the development of interactive synthesizers with features such as automatic module linking, MVC and facade layers, classes for the synchronization of synths over the network using OSC, a framework for easy application creation, etcetera.
* psynth3d: An interactive synth with an look similar to the Reactable's and a 3D interface which makes use of all the power of libpsynth.
* psynth: A command line version of the synth that can be used as OSC server or client with low resource usage.

Take into account that Psychosynth is still under development and will increase its functionality so soon ther will be new client, for example, based on Reactivision.

The Psychosynth project may be interesting in many contexts. Some of the potential users may be:

* Electronic music composers who want to experiment with systems that allow improvisation in live performances or try the advantages of collaborative networked music making.
* DJs willing to improve their sessions by showing visually in an attractive way how the mix the tracks, with a higher grade of freedom when applying effects and adding creativity.
* Developers interested in writing modular synthesizers, specially interactive software or with the ability to work over the network.

# apt-get install libboost-serialization1.35-dev libboost1.35-dev libsigc++-2.0-dev

then continue with the following installation (first check that file configure.ac has commented this line: PACKAGE_DATA_DIR="./data")

Yes, this is actually a bug. The problem is that the configure script have some trouble finding right package on Ubuntu (seems it's only Ubuntu problem). Hope the developers'll fix it soon.

Yes, this is actually a bug. Hope the developers'll fix it soon.
